WHY PATRIOT POINT

According to a 2015 report by the Congressional Research Service, more than 52,000 service members have been physically injured in action during Operation Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, New Dawn, Inherent Resolve and Freedom’s Sentinel. Many of those injured are from the Mid-Atlantic region or return to recuperate from their injuries at facilities such as Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

The Department of Defense reports more than 132,000 other service members have returned home suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress. The latest statistics also report more than 344,000 others came back from their service suffering from a Traumatic Brain Injury. Overall, estimates suggest that 400,000 — 600,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans suffer from psychological injuries.

Returning home after deployment and recovering from injuries are significant challenges for our service men and women. Creating a retreat for these brave service members to temporarily escape their surroundings is the least we can do. These men and women need our help.
